Juniperus communus

  • Variable spreading evergreen shrub, 0.5 to 1m high
  • Very dense branches
  • Needles are dark green, sharp with a white stripe on the underside that is unique to the common juniper
  • Blueberry-like cones
  • Two-year cones are dark blue, first-year cones are pale blue

Landscape Use:

  • Hardy replacement for a lot of mainstream juniper cultivars
  • Life expectancy can be hundreds of years
  • Distinctive fragrance
  • Flexible exposure; can take extreme hot and dry, but survives in the shade
  • Extremely drought tolerant; do not overwater

Special Conditions:

  • Does not like excess moisture beyond normal rainfall
  • Resistant to juniper hawthorne rust
