Dwarf Birch

Betula glandulosa

  • Just under 2m high and relatively narrow at under 1m wide
  • Dark grey branches at the tips, darker red interior
  • Branches are covered with lenticels, creating a rough texture
  • Attractive small round dark green leaves, outstanding orange to reddish fall colours
  • Relatively insignificant small green flower gives rise to the catkins
  • Male and female catkins on the same plant; female catkins disintegrate as the seeds shed (non-persistent)

Landscape Use:

  • Small, well-behaved and maintains its shape without pruning
  • Outstanding four-season hedge with a lot of character
  • The smoky grey twigs and the dark bronzy red interior add to its winter interest
  • Very tolerant of harsh urban environments
  • Small winter birds feed on the nutlets
  • Very flexible planting requirements, from full sun to partial shade; grows well in dry as well as moist areas
  • Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens

Special Conditions:

  • Does not tolerate grass growing around the base
  • Prefers a mulched bed
