Red Twig Dogwood

Cornus sericea

  • Widespread shrub up to 3m high, usually as wide as it is high
  • Thick and bushy with dark deep green leaves in summer turning a deep red in the fall
  • Small white flowers in clusters, mildly fragrant, bloom in mid summer
  • Clusters white fruit, sometimes with a bluish tinge, ripen in fall and hang on until later in the season
  • Dark red to purplish winter branches

Landscape Use:

  • Very flexible plant that needs to be used in all landscapes
  • A highlight plant for winter landscapes, but beautiful year-round
  • A true four-season plant
  • Fruit is coveted by the birds; if you have this plant, you’ll have birds in your yard
  • Grows well in a range of conditions, from sun to partial shade, but does look the densest in full sun
  • Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens

Special Conditions:

  • Tends to root in on the bottom branches and spread; if you don’t want it to spread, just keep those bottom branches pruned up
