Chokecherry

Prunus virginiana

  • Tall shrub to 4-5m that suckers to form a 3-4m wide plant.
  • All native seed sourced species have large green leaves.
  • Small white flowers in down hanging racemes appear in early spring before leaves.
  • Clusters of purple fruit in the fall.

Landscape Use:

  • Use where a large coarse shrub is needed for screening, windbreak, and bird habitat.
  • It’s called chokecherry for a good reason, although the fruit can be used for jellies or wine.
  • Prefers full sun and windy conditions.
  • Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens.

Special Conditions:

  • This is a large shrub, so make sure you have adequate room for it.
  • Always look for a local seed sourced plant because they are less susceptible to black knot.
  • The more open and windy the area, the healthier the plant.
