Saskatoon

Amelanchier alnifolia

  • Much-branched tall shrub to 6m.  Species shows some variability, height can range from 1m to 6 m.
  • Forms loose patches, can sucker to form a grove.
  • Small white flowers in clusters in early spring prior to leaves.  Sweet dark purple fruit.
  • Fall colours range from oranges to reds.

Landscape Use:

  • Saskatoons have a nice upright form and a relatively small footprint, so they make for a nice screening. The bonus of this plant is its outstanding fruit. Birds love the fruit, so make sure you’re out there early to share the pickings.
  • Needs full sun with good air movement (wind).
  • Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens.

Special Conditions:

  • Saskatoons are very disease susceptible if in shade or in an area of low air movement. Performs best in open, sunny, windy areas. Do not overwater.
