Silver / Thorny Buffaloberry

Shepherdia argentea

  • Up to 4m tall, forming thickets up to 4m wide
  • Densely branched with thorny tips
  • Bright silvery long narrow leaves
  • Very small 2mm yellow flower close to the interior branches on older wood bloom in late spring and last only about 2 days
  • Red berry 4mm in diameter found in clusters along the branches
  • Winter appearance is a large, smoky grey planting

Landscape Use:

  • Definitely another winter highlight landscape feature
  • High security plant
  • Suckers to form an impenetrable thicket; great to use if you want to ensure privacy
  • Outstanding habitat plant for birds because it gives them protection as well as nourishment
  • Edible, tasty fruit, especially for jelly; gets sweeter after a frost and high in vitamin C
  • Hardier and longer lived than Sea Buckthorn, but of similar appearance
  • Full sun, hot and dry
  • Extremely drought tolerant for Calgary and area gardens
  • Nitrogen fixer

Special Conditions:

  • Requires a hot, dry, sunny site
  • Don’t overwater
  • Suckers if the roots are disturbed
  • Plant it in a mulched bed and leave it alone
