Lodgepole Pine

Pinus contorta

  • Tall often narrow tree up to 25 to 30m in height
  • Dark green needles in bundles of two, 6 to 8cm long
  • Small cones have sharp bract on scales
  • Cones usually hang on for several seasons

Landscape Use:

  • Alberta’s provincial tree
  • Plant in areas that can handle a large tree
  • Chickadees and finches eat the seed through the winter
  • Full sun, well-drained and dry is the ideal site

Special Conditions:

  • Pines will thrive if planted in mulched beds free of grasses and weeds
  • This is a fast growing tree, usually 0.75m per year if it is not overwatered
