White Spruce

White Spruce

Picea glauca

  • Large conical tree to 20m tall
  • Narrow to broadly pyramidal shape
  • Bark is grey-brown but not deeply furrowed
  • Stiff small needles are green to bluish in colour
  • Small cones ripen in the fall

Landscape Use:

  • Use in areas where you have lots of room, this tree can dominate a small site
  • Best grown in beds with some understory plants
  • Mix in with other plants to make a more complex and interesting planting
  • In nature, they germinate and grow in the shade to become the climax community; imitate those conditions when planting

Special Conditions:

  • All spruce will perform best if grass is not allowed to grow next to base
  • Keep spruce dry, they do not like wet feet
  • Always look up to make sure you are not planting under a power or phone line
