Sun or Shade

Before plotting out the plants and trees in your yard, take the time to see where the sun hits and measure how long it lasts. Some plants require full sun for 6-8 hours, while others prefer shade. Mapping out your landscaping project based on sun vs. shade will help your plans thrive.

Soil

Once you’ve mapped out your landscaping project, it’s time to test your soil. Most plants prefer soil that is nutrient rich and well-drained, so if the soil you’re working with is looking dry and sandy, you may want to consider working in some bags of healthy soil so that your plants have a good home to take root in.

Compost

Speaking of healthy soil, in order to keep your plants happy and healthy, it is important to feed them! Compost can be made at home over the course of about one year, or it can be purchased at plant centres, like Bow Point Nursery! Compost can be used in a variety of ways. It can be sprinkled on top of flower beds, raked into tree beds, or added to soil before seeding new grass.

Mulch

Once your trees or flowers are planted, mulch will become your best friend! Not only does it add a decorative element to your garden, mulch reduces weeds and helps your soil to retain water and nutrients.

Watering

Since you’ve laid down your mulch, your plants will require less watering due to the mulch helping to prevent evaporation! That being said, your trees and plants will still be thirsty, so knowing how to properly water them is crucial. Hand watering — by can or hose — is the easiest and most cost-efficient way to water your plants. Instead of expensive irrigation systems, this more traditional method gives you complete control and will help you save money by not overwatering. The best time of day to water your plants is in the evening — the water has a longer time to be absorbed as there is no sun to pull it out!
